An Overview of Beautiful Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale FLFor your next trip to the sunny city of Fort Lauderdale, if possible, try to arrange your schedule around some of the many exciting festivals you will find there.

One such festival now heading into its 11th years is the Fort Lauderdale Canjun/Zydeco Crawfish Festival, which will be held in early May for the year 2003. This festival was originally held at Mills Pond Park but in 1999, it was moved to the Fort Lauderdale Festive Site due to size and growth. At this festival, you will have the opportunity to witness some amazing Cajun and Zydeco music and food. Dancers start performing at the beginning of the three-day festival and do not stop until it is time to go home. There are huge wooden dance floors where you can take free dance lessons. The lessons cover an array of dance type to include Cajun Jitterbug, Waltz, Zydeco, and both beginner and advanced two-step.

In addition to the fabulous dancing, you will also find food, as you have never seen before. More than 35,000 pounds of live crawfish are boiled during the course of the festival and served fresh. Other popular dishes include red beans and rice, boudin and andouille sausage, po-boys, etouffee, crawfish bisque, and mouth-watering desserts, special to Fort Lauderdale. For the entire family, games, contests, and other fun activities are scheduled. In addition to the dancing, music, and food, arts and crafts, a kid's watermelon sacrifice, old-fashioned dancing around the May pole, crawfish eating contests for the adults, and much more is going on.

Another celebration is Earth Day. In 2003, the event takes place in mid-April and will be held at the Quiet Waters Park located in the close city of Deerfield Park. This festival begins at noon and the festivities continue until dusk. Entry fees are only $1 per person or $5 per car with children under the age of five being free. Activities include a unique encounter in Flamingo Gardens, Walk for Wildlife, recycling programs, live music, prize giveaways, and tasty food and drinks. Other notable festivals include the Bank of America Starlight Musicals held in June through August on Friday nights, the July 4th Celebration, where there are activities and fun for the entire family, and the Fort Lauderdale Second Annual Sun-Sentinel Dragon Boats and Buskers Festival, which will be held February 13 through 15, 2004. This is almost like a parade but instead of colorful floats cruising down the street, you will see brightly decorated boats as they float along the water. These are all exciting celebrations and you will have a blast at any one of them.
